HOUSTON – The bestselling psychological thriller ‘The Girl on the Train’ is bringing secrets, suspense and plenty of twists to Alley Theatre’s Summer Chills series, on stage through August 30th in the Hubbard Theatre.
Based on Paula Hawkins’ bestselling novel and the hit DreamWorks film, the stage adaptation by Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel—the same duo behind the stage adaptation of The Da Vinci Code—takes audiences inside the fractured memories of a woman trying to uncover the truth.
The story follows Rachel, a woman struggling with dependency whose memories of a night out are fragmented. When a girl goes missing, Rachel finds herself trying to piece together what happened. But there’s a problem: how do you know who to trust when you can’t even trust yourself?
The stage adaptation is described as more lithe and concise than the novel, staying true to the story while moving at a quicker, more streamlined pace. Frequent scene transitions give the production a cinematic feel, while a sleek, minimalist set uses sliding panels and a bridge that can be rearranged to transform the space.
The production incorporates projections, flashing and fast-moving lights, haze and plenty of LED tape. In fact, there’s reportedly enough LED tape in the production to stretch from Alley Theatre to City Hall!
