Houston – In honor of National Craft for Your Local Shelter Day, the team at Companion Energy traded their desks for a creative volunteer project, crafting handmade treat mats for shelter dogs.
The enrichment mats are designed to hide treats within layers of fabric, encouraging dogs to sniff, search and play while providing mental stimulation and helping reduce kennel stress.
The following morning, the team delivered the mats to the Humane Society, where shelter dogs immediately put them to the test. One of those pups, Vito, eagerly searched for the hidden treats and, in the best ending of all, was adopted later that day and hopefully found his forever home.
Companion Energy volunteers also spent time walking the dogs, giving them a chance to enjoy some sunshine, and stopped to play with the shelter’s kittens, making the visit about much more than delivering donations.
