Houston – Disney’s Moana has captured the hearts of audiences with its inspiring story of courage, family and adventure. But beyond the animation is a celebration of the rich traditions and heritage of Polynesian culture.
On Houston Life, the Houston Hula Academy shares a special Tahitian dance performance while highlighting the history and cultural influences that inspired the beloved story. Alisha Satoafaiga along with her dad Chief Asmoua Tama Satoafaiga discussed what Moana represents to many Polynesian families and how the film has helped spark conversations about cultural identity and representation.
Started in 2022, the academy’s mission is to preserve and share Polynesian traditions through dance, music and education, helping connect Houston audiences to the vibrant cultures of the Pacific Islands. The academy is under the umbrella of Drums of the Pacific, USA which was started in 1998 by Chief Satoafaiga.
