Burglary Hot Spots: Top 3 areas in Houston where most residential break-ins are happening

HPD Data reveals top three police beats for residential burglary.

An investigation by KPRC 2 Investigates has uncovered the top spots in home burglaries across the city, revealing the neighborhoods most affected and offering insights from law enforcement experts.

Where are the burglaries happening?

The review of Houston Police Department data aimed to pinpoint the areas with the highest burglary rates. The results may surprise residents, particularly with the top location being a Westside neighborhood near Westheimer.

#1. Westheimer, westside, inside Sam Houston Tollway

With 184 reported burglaries since Jan. 1, 2024, this neighborhood has been identified as the most targeted in Houston. Apartment complexes, particularly those with security lapses, have become prime targets for criminals.

#2. Sunnyside and surrounding neighborhoods

This area, located east of 288 and on both sides of the South Loop, has recorded 142 residential burglary reports this year, making it the second most affected area. This area is home to a mix of large government-subsidized housing, and new and old homes.

#3. Southwest Houston near Gessner and Bellfort

This area, anchored by both Fondren and Gessner near Bellfort, has had its share of trouble so far this year. This area ranks third with numerous residents, including Matt Amonds, having experienced multiple break-ins.

There have been 120 residential burglary calls for service so far this year.

“Having someone break into your home, it kind of gives you an uneasy feeling, this is your secure place,” Amonds said.

Insights from Law Enforcement

Retired Detective Greg Shelton, who spent decades with the Houston Police Department, shared his insights on burglary patterns.

According to Shelton, most residential burglaries typically occur between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. when many residents are away from home. He emphasized that a car in the driveway and a playing radio can deter potential thieves.

Protecting Your Home

Residents are urged to take preventive measures to protect their homes. Shelton recommends three key strategies:

  • Illuminate your property: Keeping the exterior well-lit can deter burglars.
  • Install visible security cameras: A clear security presence can discourage crime. Point one of them at the street in front of your home.
  • Property perimeter safety: Ensuring gates and fences are intact and can prevent unauthorized access.
