How improvements in dental implant technology helped a Houston man start eating the foods he loves again

HOUSTON – For years, Alex Vargo’s teeth looked great but they weren’t functioning properly.

“I always prided myself on my smile and it got to the point where I couldn’t eat and I couldn’t understand why my teeth hurt,” he says.

“I couldn’t eat an apple -- scared to death that a tooth was going to come out,” Vargo added.

The problem Vargo faced is something that is a common culprit when it comes to loose and unstable teeth: bone loss. Dr. Michel Azer, a periodontist and implantologist, says many of the patients he sees have been told by other dentists that their bone loss and gums are so bad that there are no options for restoring a healthy, functional smile. That, he says, is not true, thanks to the latest dental implant technology, which also significantly decreases the number of office visits and time in the dental chair, required to give patients a new smile.

Additionally, Dr. Michel Azer says one of the most common reasons people delay getting the dental care they need is fear. “In my clinic we are all trained to handle the anxiety which is the number one concern,” he says.

“I wasn’t living life to the fullest and at my age I didn’t want to spend the rest of my years not being able to enjoy things,” says Vargo. I wanted my smile back, I wanted the discomfort gone,” he added.

Vargo got his wish. “I can eat anything,” he says.
