Flood threat continues with more rounds of showers and storms Thursday

Flood Watch for parts of the greater Houston area

Next round of storms:

Houston is waking up to a dry start but don’t let that fool you. Rounds of rain and storms will be moving in from the west later this morning through the afternoon. The concern with these storms are the speed. The trend over the last few days, have storms slowing down and not moving out of our area quickly. There is a flood watch that starts Thursday morning lasting through Memorial Day. This pattern is with us through at least Tuesday of next week.

Thursday Morning:

After a good soaking with rain totals ranging between 2″- 6″ late Tuesday to Wednesday. our next round arrives Thursday morning.

Showers and storm mainly south of I-10.

Friday and beyond: Flood risks and daily breakdown:

With the ground already saturated in our southwestern cities, street, stream and river flooding is possible with another round of heavy rain. Placement is key, and so far the Houston area’s rain totals have been manageable. But if too much rain falls in a short amount of time, we could get street flooding in the Houston area. Here’s how the next several days look.

  • Thursday: Next organized rain arrives late morning to midday, raising the risk of localized flooding.
  • Friday: Storms expected again in the morning but may be more scattered.
  • Saturday and Sunday: More waves of heavy rainfall could develop, keeping the flood risk in play.
  • Memorial Day: Flood watch remains, with another chance for storms and heavier rainfall.

Additional rainfall totals are forecast to reach 4 to 5 inches for many areas along the upper Texas coast through Monday. Temperatures are expected to stay mostly in the low to mid-80s. It won’t rain all day long so don’t cancel any plans but be ready to adjust those plans.

Memorial Day Weekend:

The number one question I’ve received about this upcoming weekend is timing of the rain. Unfortunately, the weather pattern we have isn’t giving us this luxury. We aren’t able to see these small disturbances until 12 to 24 hours before the rain starts. Stay tuned, we’ll continue to update our forecast and tell you as soon as we see what’s coming next.

7-Day Forecast:

This active pattern should stay with us through at least Tuesday. The hope is next week we head into a hit and miss afternoon storm pattern and not the widespread daily flood threat. We’ll keep you posted.
