Hurricane season, which goes from June 1 to Nov. 30, predicts a 30% chance of a near-normal season, a 60% chance of an above-normal season, and a 10% chance of a below-normal season. This forecast falls in line with similar forecasts from Colorado St. Univ. and others.

NOAA has a 70% confidence in these ranges.

“As we witnessed last year with significant inland flooding from hurricanes Helene and Debby, the impacts of hurricanes can reach far beyond coastal communities,” said Acting NOAA Administrator Laura Grimm. “NOAA is critical for the delivery of early and accurate forecasts and warnings, and provides the scientific expertise needed to save lives and property.”

Many factors to consider:

There are a number of factors that will go into how the season will eventually plays out but one of the most important factors will be the consistency of warm to hot sea surface temperatures. At the time of the release of the forecast from NHC, the water is warming quickly heading into the tropical season.

There are many other factors that the KPRC2 Weather Team will be monitoring including keeping an eye on the tropical satellite images every day.

We’re officially on the tropical clock in 10 days as the season begins next Sunday, June 1st. Now is the time to get your hurricane kits prepped and ready to go!
