Flash flood watch continues as rain moves through region

Nearly 10 inches of rain falls in Brazoria County

Thunderstorms dumped nearly 10 inches of rain Tuesday on parts of Brazoria County, prompting school closures and delaying morning commuters.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning until 2 p.m. for Brazoria and Galveston counties.

A flash flood watch was issued until 4 p.m. for Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Jackson, Liberty, Matagorda and Waller counties. Between 2 and 3 inches of rain is forecast for the watch area with isolated locations receiving up to 6 inches of rain.

Meteorologist Britta Merwin said radar showed that more than 9 inches of rain had fallen in Danbury, where officials at the Danbury Independent School District closed school for the day.

Rainfall totals ranged up to .75 inches, which left the creeks and bayous in the area in good shape, Merwin said. Up to 3 inches of rain has fallen in Sealy, after heavy rains there Monday.

Tuesday’s forecast

Here’s the latest forecast from Merwin:

Moderate to heavy rain continues to move through the metro area and will take through 11 a.m. to push through. Conditions will continue to improve and the threat of flooding is coming down.
