Senate Bill 16 in Texas proposes requiring proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration, affecting new voters and those currently registered.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has sent letters to both the Bexar and Harris County Commissioner’s Courts threatening to sue if proposed plans to mail voter registration forms to individuals regardless of their eligibility moves forward.

“If eligible citizens can legally register to vote when conducting their business at a DPS office, why would they need a second opportunity to register with a booth outside?” Paxton said in the press statement

Monday is the last day to get registered to vote in the March 5, 2024 Texas primary election.

When you register to vote, your home address becomes public information. Don’t panic. There are ways to conceal your home address and cast your vote.

Groups across the state of Virginia work all year long to get students registered to vote in high school and college -- the idea being, if these students start young, they’ll vote their entire lives.

UPDATE: An email received Sunday, Feb. 6 contained the following response from USPS Senior Public Relations Representative, Martha Johnson:

Answer: Harris County residents should mail their completed and signed voter registration forms to the county’s voter registrar’s office. But the state is already seeing one major effect of the pandemic on voting: It’s much harder to register voters. Texas is not one of them, and the state’s Republican leadership has long fought efforts to allow for an online voter registration process. “We’re not seeing an increase in voter registration activity that compensates for the decrease that we’ve seen in previous months,” he said. Democrats and Republicans told The Texas Tribune that they’re struggling with voter registration in the era of COVID-19. While Texas has turned to online services during the pandemic, the state doesn’t allow residents to register when they renew their driver’s licenses online.
