Frigid temperatures, power outages lead to water problems

The Texas city of Kyle, south of Austin, asked residents Wednesday to suspend water usage until further notice because of a shortage. “We are close to running out of water supply in Kyle.”In Memphis, Tennessee, the power and water company asked residents to reduce their water usage through Friday. Meanwhile, the city's fire department said it has received hundreds of broken water pipe calls since Monday. Austin Water told residents in the southwest section of the city to boil water before using it for drinking or cooking. AdLeaders in Austin and the Houston area asked residents to stop dripping water from their faucets because of a drop in water pressure.

Power outages linger for millions as another icy storm looms

Nearly 3.4 million customers around the U.S. were still without electricity, and some also lost water service. More than 100 million people live in areas covered by some type of winter weather warning, watch or advisory, the weather service said. Weather-related outages have been particularly stubborn in Oregon, where some customers have been without power for almost a week. At the peak of the storm, more than 350,000 customers in the Portland area were in the dark. In Oregon, authorities confirmed Tuesday that four people died in the Portland area of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Man who stormed U.S. Capitol charged with threatening to assassinate Rep. Ocasio-Cortez

A Dallas-area man who joined a violent mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol earlier this month has been charged with making a death threat in a social media post against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Garret Miller, 34, of Richardson, Texas was arrested earlier this week on multiple charges related to the Capitol riot, according to a federal complaint. The upgraded charge came relatively soon after the initial complaint was filed in Washington, D.C. federal court, Broden said. The threat charge against Miller is based on the claim by prosecutors that he threatened Rep. Ocasio Cortez, D-N.Y., across state lines on social media. Miller also threatened a Capitol Police officer who shot dead a woman trying to breach the Capitol building during the riot.

Jobless claims fall to 751,000, but new infections a threat

Thursday’s report from the Labor Department said the number of people who are continuing to receive unemployment benefits fell more than 700,000 to 7.76 million. The still-elevated number of jobless claims underscores that a full recovery from the pandemic recession remains far off. Some research suggests that by September, unemployed Americans had spent about two-thirds of what they had saved. The outlook for the economy over the next six months fell particularly hard, according to the Conference Board, a business research group. With roughly 20 million Americans unemployed, the pandemic recession is still causing hardship for many families.

Officer accused of raping 16-year-old homeless girl in city's outreach program

LOWELL, Massachusetts (KTRK) -- A police officer has been indicted after reports that he raped a 16-year-old girl while working for the city's outreach program, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office.Officer Kevin Garneau, 49, was part of the city's outreach program which is geared toward providing assistance for homeless people and those with substance abuse issues. I acted as soon as we were made aware of these allegations. She also claimed that the officer threw cash at her and told her to get help after each alleged incident.The DA's office says the allegations came to light in January 2019. An investigation was launched immediately, according to WFXT Garneau is a 19-year veteran of the police department. He was released on personal recognizance, given a GPS monitor and ordered to stay away from the victim.
