A 130-page appeal has been filed in an attempt to overturn a court’s decision that backs up a Barbers Hill Independent School District policy, prohibiting a student from wearing his hair in a natural style on campus.

Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is expected to hold a press conference following the recent ruling which stated that Barbers Hill Independent School District did not violate the CROWN Act after disciplining a student for wearing his natural hair.

After a short trial, a Texas judge ruled that Barbers Hill school officials are not violating a new state law prohibiting hair discrimination.

The trial surrounding a Barbers Hill student disciplined for his hairstyle is scheduled to go before a federal judge this Thursday.

A Texas high school student has missed nearly half of his junior year in the classroom after being disciplined by leaders in his school district for his hairstyle.

Nearly every parent with children in the district that KPRC 2 came across Thursday was in favor of sending kids back to school for in-person instruction with no delays. Many parents are comfortable with the in-person option but the issue is causing tension between the superintendent and the Chambers County Public Health Department. Classes are scheduled to begin August 19 with parents having the option of starting kids online or at home, per TEA guidelines. The health departments request for an in-person delay drew a fiery response in this letter from Barbers Hill Superintendent Dr. Greg Poole.

MONT BELVIEU, Texas – Inside the Barbers Hill Independent School District board meeting there is a clear division on the issue of the dress code policy. Gary Monroe, with United Urban Alumni Association, spoke to board members on his opposition to the dress code. At Monday night’s meeting, Arnold’s family and several activists took to the podium to express their discontent with the district’s current dress code policy. This not about dress code, this is about policing black boys,” an activist said. DeAndre Arnold’s father, David Arnold, told the board the continuous punishment of his son is a form of bullying.
