Wrong-way driver dies after smashing into big rig on 59 Eastex Freeway

All northbound lanes of Eastex Freeway at Laura Koppe have reopened

HOUSTON – All northbound lanes of the Eastex Freeway at Laura Koppe Road have reopened after a driver traveling the wrong way was killed when he crashed into an 18-wheeler Friday morning.

The accident was reported just before 4 a.m., according to Houston TranStar. 

According to officers, a man in a blue GMC Sierra pickup truck was traveling the wrong way at a high rate of speed in the northbound lanes of the Eastex Freeway and crashed into an 18-wheeler.

Police said the man in the pickup truck died at the scene. The 18-wheeler driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

After the first accident, a dump truck hit the back of the 18-wheeler, and its driver fled the scene. Authorities do not have a description of the dump truck. 

The investigation is continuing.
