A man was arrested after allegedly cutting his brother’s throat during a family disturbance and refusing to surrender, leading to a SWAT response.
The man has since been charged with aggravated assault of a family member.
According to investigators, officers were initially called to a home located in the 7700 block of Hornwood for a reported family disturbance. Police said the suspect, a man in his late 30s, got into an argument with family members before pulling out two knives and cutting his brother, who is in his late 40s, in the throat.
Authorities said the brother’s injuries were not considered life-threatening. Family members called 911, and the brother was treated for his injuries. Police said he is not believed to have been taken to a hospital
When patrol officers arrived, they found the suspect outside the home armed with a knife. Officers said he refused repeated commands to surrender before running back inside the residence.
The Patrol Support Team responded and secured the scene before SWAT and the Hostage Negotiation Team were called in.
Negotiators spent hours attempting to convince the suspect to come outside peacefully, but police said he repeatedly refused.
During the standoff, officers breached a window and deployed a drone inside the home to locate the suspect and confirm he was alive. A robotic dog was also sent into the house, but police said the suspect still refused to surrender.
Authorities eventually deployed CS gas into the home. The suspect then exited the residence without injuries and was taken into custody by SWAT officers.
Police recovered one knife from the scene.
Investigators said no hostages were inside the home during the standoff. The suspect lived at the residence with his brother, his brother’s wife and two children, including a teenager and a child younger than 10.
The investigation remains ongoing.
