HOUSTON – Some Texas lawmakers were aboard the Amtrak train that crashed Wednesday near Charlottesville, Virginia.
According to officials, the train was transporting some Republican lawmakers to a retreat in West Virginia when it collided with a garbage truck.
Here is the status of members of the Texas congressional delegation:
Rep. John Culberson
Culberson, of Houston, who represents the Texas 7th District, said he was aboard the train and that he is uninjured. He said in an interview with KPRC 2 that there were no major injuries aboard the train.
“There was a tremendous boom and impact — I wasn’t sure quite what it was. It was a lot of smoke and ash — went past my window. I actually thought it was an explosion of some sort,” said Culberson.
Culberson was one of the first to help congressmen who happened to be doctors get to victims.
"Congressman Brad Wenstrup of Ohio an Army Surgeon ... He is the Congressman who triaged Congressman Steve Scalise at the baseball field and helped save Scalise' life. So I spotted Brad immediately, and helped get him to the rear of the train," Culberson said.
Sen. Ted Cruz
Cruz, the state's junior senator, was aboard the train, according to Culberson. Cruz tweeted that he is fine.
Thanks to all who have showed concern, I am just fine. Please keep in your prayers any others involved in the collision who have been injured.
