Slain graduate student laid to rest

Gelareh Bagherzadeh killed at Woodway Point townhomes

HOUSTON – Family and friends said goodbye Monday to a graduate student who was fatally shot near the Galleria.

Gelareh Bagherzadeh, 30, was found dead in her car at the Woodway Point townhomes on Augusta Drive near Sugar Hill on Jan. 16.

Her funeral service was held at Second Baptist Church on Monday afternoon.

Friends said Bagherzadeh, a graduate student who was studying genetics at M.D. Anderson, was passionate about freedom and democracy. After moving to the United States about five years ago, she joined Sabaz Houston and spent time protesting the oppressive Iranian government.

Houston police say they have almost no leads in this case. They said Bagherzadeh's murder may have been motivated by her activism, but it could just as well have been a botched robbery.

Anyone with information about Bagherzadeh's death is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
