SPRING – A 29-year-old man has been arrested and charged nearly 24 hours after an unconscious 2-year-old girl was brought to a Spring gas station.
Gerardo Gonzalez, 29, is charged with injury to a child while the young girl continues fighting for her life, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
The sheriff said Gerardo Gonzalez struck the toddler multiple times causing her injuries.
What happened
On Thursday evening around 8:20 p.m., the couple drove from their home on Rendezvous Drive in Spring to a gas station on Cypresswood Drive about three minutes away.
There, they met with Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constables who began rendering life-saving care on the toddler.
She had to be rushed to the hospital and eventually flown to a different hospital, the sheriff said, where her condition is described as “very critical.”
The investigation
Overnight Thursday into Friday, Precinct 4 turned the investigation over to homicide detectives with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators spent all night at the home on Rendezvous Court and the hospital.
CPS confirmed the agency is also investigating, as state investigators were seen at the home on Friday afternoon.
“Our thoughts are with this young toddler as she continues to fight for her life. Cases involving children are among the most heartbreaking first responders encounter, and we remain committed to seeking justice on her behalf,” Sheriff Gonzalez wrote on X.
Neighbors told KPRC 2 News the couple hadn’t lived at the home for very long.
