HOUSTON – Houston ISD is launching a new tool this school year to help parents stay connected with students who ride the bus. It’s called SMARTtag.
HISD says all students who are registered to use any of the district’s transportation services will get a special SMARTtag badge. They will scan it every time they get on or off the bus.

Parents can use the corresponding app to confirm their student arrived on the bus and to school safely. Dr. Dontarrious Rowls is the Deputy Chief of Transportation and Fleet Management for HISD. He says this app gives parents peace of mind, and so much more.
“In the past, first day of school new process, new systems, new driver, new bus numbers. So sometimes our students get confused,” said Rowls. “It does not allow the student to get on the wrong bus.”
Rowls says starting on the first day of school, drivers will manually input when a student boards or departs the bus. In about two weeks, official SMARTtag badges will be handed out to bus riders.
The district says parents have been notified about this new tool. But if you need more information, follow this link: HISD SMARTtag.
