Authorities said he was on the ground near a vehicle at the complex entrance and appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound.

Paramedics responded and pronounced him dead at the scene, officials said.

Detectives with the sheriff’s office homicide unit were canvassing the area for witnesses and speaking with people who may be related to the victim. Investigators said they have not confirmed what led up to the shooting, and there were no immediate reports of an argument before the gunfire.

No suspect is in custody. Authorities also said they have not yet determined whether the wound was self-inflicted or the result of an assault.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.
