SPRING, Texas – Inside North Central Church, volunteers are making final preparations for what is expected to be one of the community’s biggest back-to-school outreach events.
On Saturday, nearly 2,000 people are expected to walk through the doors of the church as families line up for a chance to receive a brand-new pair of shoes for their children—completely free of charge.
“We like to call it controlled chaos,” said Adam Sanchez with a laugh to Mario Diaz as he gave 2 Helps You a behind the scenes tour.
The annual giveaway has become a tradition since it began in 2018. This year, families will find shelves filled with thousands of pairs of shoes from brands including Adidas and Nike.
“As you can see, we have Adidas here, we have Nike here,” Sanchez said as we walked the massive collection of new shoes.
Unlike a typical giveaway, volunteers take time to ensure every child receives a pair of shoes that not only fits properly but is also something they’ll be excited to wear.
“As the family comes in, the students come in, we’ll have a person over here who is going to take charge and then send the families to whatever station is open,” Sanchez explained.
Each child’s feet are measured before volunteers help them choose from several styles and colors.
“We want to give out the right size of shoe for the student, so we actually measure and size their feet,” Sanchez said. “Once we have all the information, we ask what they like. Do they want a straight white shoe? Do they want a blue one? One with stars?”
Giving children and their approach to choices, he said, it is an important part of the experience.
“We give them options,” Sanchez said. “We want to bless our children with something that they want to actually wear.”
The outreach extends beyond footwear. Volunteers also have packed 1,700 backpacks filled with school supplies that will be distributed alongside the shoes, helping students start the school year prepared.
For Sanchez, the event represents more than handing out shoes and backpacks.
When asked what will go through his mind when the final pair is handed out to a child? “We did our job. We did what we set out to do,” said Sanchez.
The giveaway is open to the community beginning at 11 a.m. and it should be complete by early afternoon. Every child will be taken care of according to Sanchez. Those planning to attend are encouraged to arrive early.
