Man fatally shot by officer during traffic stop in Galveston; Texas Rangers investigating officer-involved shooting

GALVESTON, Texas – The Texas Rangers have been called in to investigate a fatal officer-involved shooting which happened in Galveston Monday afternoon.

The Galveston Police Department said it happened around 3:45 p.m. in the 1700 block of 55th Street.

Right now, details on what led up to the shooting are limited, but it happened during a traffic stop. Police say an occupant in the vehicle was injured after an officer fired his weapon.

Officers rendered first aid and the injured individual was transported to the UTMB Emergency Department where he was later pronounced dead.

The officer involved has been placed on modified duty pending the outcome of the investigation, which is in accordance with department policy.

Per department policy, officer-involved shootings are investigated by outside law enforcement agencies. The Texas Rangers and the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office have been called in to conduct the investigation.

“Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this incident,” said Chief Doug Balli. “We will provide additional information as soon as it is appropriate to do so without compromising the investigation.”
