According to METRO, a bus operator noticed a person at the stop holding a knife around 10:45 a.m. and alerted METRO’s control center. Supervisors and METRO police responded, and the encounter escalated when the man moved toward officers, prompting them to fire their weapons, METRO said.
The man was hurt and received emergency care at the scene before being taken to a hospital, where he died about 30 minutes later, METRO said. No riders or METRO employees were injured.
As is typical in officer-involved shootings, METRO said the Houston Police Department has assumed the investigation and will be the agency releasing updates. METRO police are cooperating.
METRO also praised the employee who reported the situation, saying the worker followed procedure and quickly notified authorities. The agency said it remains focused on safety across the transit system and offered condolences to the man’s family and loved ones.
“Any loss of life is a tragedy, and we are keeping the individual’s family and loved ones in our thoughts,” METRO said.
