GALVESTON, Texas – A man is dead and another person was taken to the hospital after Galveston police responded to a west end home for a reported shooting early Thursday and then pursued a suspect vehicle that ultimately crashed near Jamaica Beach, according to a police media release.
Officers were sent to a residence in the 21800 block of Lampasas Drive at about 12:53 a.m. March 19 after receiving a report of a man bleeding on the front porch, possibly from a gunshot wound.

Police said officers arriving at the scene saw a suspect drive away in a maroon pickup truck, prompting a pursuit with assistance from Texas Department of Public Safety troopers. An attempted traffic stop near FM 3005 and Salt Cedar Drive did not succeed, police said.
The pursuit continued along FM 3005. Police said officers used stop sticks to damage the truck’s tires, and a DPS helicopter helped track the vehicle.
According to police, the chase ended just east of Jamaica Beach when the driver ran into a ditch. Officers then approached the vehicle and found the suspect with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the department said. The suspect was taken by Galveston EMS to UTMB, where he was pronounced dead.
Back at the Lampasas address, police said officers found a second person on a rear porch and began life-saving measures before that individual was transported by Galveston EMS to UTMB. The person’s condition was not released.
The Galveston Police Department Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the incident. The Texas Rangers are conducting a separate investigation into the pursuit, police said.
