An online petition, created by a group calling itself the Klein ISD Parent Safety Coalition, called for several safety changes, including metal detector screenings at secondary schools, stronger campus entry controls and faster parent notification when incidents occur.
Details of gun-related incidents
According to Klein ISD, the first incident happened at Klein Collins High when a student brought a gun to campus and discharged it while alone in a restroom.
No one was injured. The student was detained, arrested, and is now facing felony charges.
The second incident happened at Zwink Elementary School when an man entered the front office after a visitor exited without fully securing the door, according to the district.
Officials said the man appeared to be wearing a uniform and had a holstered firearm. Staff asked for identification, but he did not provide it. He was later identified, arrested, and charged with a felony.
The third incident happened at Klein High School when a student brought an unloaded handgun to campus and showed it to other students. Other students reported the weapon, and the student was detained.
Klein ISD says the student has been expelled and felony charges are being pursued.
Here’s how Klein ISD is responding
The district has added additional safety measures, which will be effectively immediately, including:
- Increased police presence at each school in partnership with additional law enforcement agencies.
- Expanded random metal detector screenings on an unannounced, rotating schedule. Students may be asked to pass through screenings at any time while on campus.
- Increased random searches with K-9 police units in partnership with additional law enforcement agencies across our campuses.
The district is also asking parents to provide feedback at feedback@kleinisd.net, and to do the following:
- Talk to their children over Spring Break about the seriousness of bringing a weapon to school. Any student who chooses to bring a weapon into one of our schools will leave in handcuffs, will be expelled, and will face felony charges.
- Ensure that any firearms in their home are stored safely and securely, completely inaccessible to minors.
- Remind their children that if they ever see or hear something that does not feel right, the right move is to tell a trusted adult immediately. As always, concerns can be reported at any time, anonymously, through our Keep Klein Safe platform at https://kleinisd.net/keepkleinsafe, or by calling Klein ISD Police 24 hours a day at (832) 249-4266.
