When officers tried to pull over the vehicle, police said the driver, an unidentified man, sped off. Moments later, he failed to navigate a turn and slammed into the side of a tattoo shop.

The car smashed through a brick wall and ruptured water lines to the building, officials said. Firefighters with the South Houston Fire Department were called to the scene and needed a wrecker to pull the vehicle out before they could begin extrication.

Crews spent about 30 to 40 minutes cutting the driver out of the car. He was then taken by ambulance to the Texas Medical Center for treatment of critical injuries.

Investigators said they are working to determine if the man was impaired and why he fled from officers.
