BMW of North America has issued a safety recall for nearly 200,000 vehicles over concerns that a fire could start while parked or driven.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue stems from corrosion in the engine starter relay, which may overheat and short-circuit — potentially causing a fire.
The recall affects model years from 2019 to 2022, including models such as the Z4, 330i, X3, X4, 530i, 430i (standard and convertible), and the 2022 230i. Additionally, 1,469 Toyota Supra vehicles built by BMW are also included in the recall.

BMW is urging owners of affected vehicles to park their cars outdoors and away from buildings or other vehicles until repairs can be made.
Because parts are limited, BMW will carry out the recall in phases. Interim notice letters will start going out on November 14. The VIN lookup tool will also be available on NHTSA’s site for owners to check whether their vehicle is subject to the recall.
