Critical NOAA weather radio signal for Galveston County restored
GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s All-Hazards radio signal for Galveston County is back on the air.
The signal has been down since March, when a fire destroyed the transmitter in Hitchcock.
NOAA’s All Hazards weather radio serves as a lifeline of information when storms knock out power and cell service.
Galveston County residents have been frustrated with the time it has taken to restore the signal since we are in the midst of Hurricane season.
NOAA officials told KPRC 2 earlier this month this is a temporary signal, with a permanent signal scheduled to be in place by the end of September. The new transmitter will be placed on Galveston Island.
