HOUSTON – With the severe storms moving across the area, Houstonians are looking for ways to protect their homes from the weather.
Here’s what you can do today to safeguard your property before a storm:
Check your roof for loose shingles and leaks to prevent major damage.
Ensure your plumbing system is well-maintained to prevent flooding and sewage backups.
Avoid covering AC units during floods to prevent electrocution hazards.
Stock up on essential supplies like water, canned food, flashlights, and medications to last through the storm and aftermath.
Prepare for your pets’ needs with enough food, water, medications, and a pet carrier, and keep a current photo of them in case they get lost.

In addition, here are some tips from the Texas Severe Storms Association for dealing with flash floods:
Leave your vehicle immediately if it stalls in flood waters and move to higher ground.
Keep away from flooded creeks, streams, or drainage ditches, especially children, as swift water can be dangerous.
Act quickly, as rising waters can make escape difficult, and soggy banks may collapse.
