MD Anderson cuts spending, pauses some hiring after multi-million dollar budget shortfall

HOUSTON – The MD Anderson Cancer Center in the Texas Medical Center sent a memo to employees on April 17, announcing it will cut back on spending to prepare for a multi-million-dollar budget shortfall this year.

MD Anderson stated it will take proactive steps to ensure budgets are met by August 31. The hospital will begin by implementing a hiring freeze for new administrative positions while prioritizing the hiring of direct patient care roles.

Applicants for research positions funded by external grants and contracts will still be considered.

“The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center remains in a strong financial position and is taking measured, proactive actions to ensure budgets are met for the fiscal year ending on Aug. 31. The institution is prioritizing the hiring of direct patient care positions and has paused hiring for new administrative positions. Research positions funded by external grants and contracts still are being considered. MD Anderson’s focus on financial stewardship and resilience will ensure its continued strength now and for the future.”
