HOUSTON – After extreme winter weather conditions put the city on hold, Houston drivers back on the roads still experienced major traffic setbacks due to freezing road conditions known as black ice.

Black ice is a glaze that forms on roads, sidewalks, and driveways. It is not easily seen and is often clear, making a black road surface visible underneath. It is more likely to be present during the early morning hours and on bridges, elevated overpasses, and shaded spots on the road.
Houston Transtar reported at least three locations with icy road conditions, one of which resulted in a 7-vehicle pileup on Grand Parkway toward E. Hardy around 6 a.m.

Here is a list of the three locations with black ice on the road that are completely shut down and when they’re expected to reopen.
- IH-10 East Eastbound At US 90 Left Interchange Ramp Lanes are completely closed on Thursday, January 23, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
- SH-99 Lanier/Grand Pkwy - North Westbound At E Hardy 1 Mainlane, Left Shoulder Lanes are completely closed on Thursday, January 23, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
- South Sam Houston Tollway Westbound At SH-288 Exit Ramp Lanes are completely closed on Thursday, January 23, 2025 from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM
