As Hurricane Beryl approaches, Chief Meteorologist Anthony Yanez reports that Southeast Texas is already experiencing significant rainfall from the storm’s outer bands.
The initial line of storms, moving south to north, has passed through areas from north of The Woodlands to Sealy, bringing significant rainfall.

Current storm status
As of 11 p.m., Beryl is a category 1 hurricane with 75 mph winds, moving north-northwest at 10 mph. The storm is expected to make landfall near Matagorda Bay around 2:00 a.m., By 8:00 a.m., hurricane-force winds could affect areas along I-10, including Columbus, Katy, and Houston.
Forecast and potential impact
Houston’s primary threats include flooding and tornadoes, with the most severe weather expected between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. The storm will continue to impact the region through the morning, clearing by the afternoon. Futurecast models show continuous rain bands until late evening, with heavy rain expected in Houston and south of I-10 around 2:00 a.m.
Rainfall and flooding concerns
Yanez emphasized the potential for significant rainfall, with projections of up to 9 inches in Houston, 13 inches in Galveston, and 6-8 inches in Katy. The slow-moving storm, traveling at 10 mph, poses a high risk of flooding due to the heavy rainfall over a short period.

Power outages and tornado threats
The storm’s strength raises concerns about widespread power outages and downed trees. Tornado watches and warnings are anticipated as Beryl makes landfall, with several possible tornadoes expected across Southeast Texas.
Storm surge warnings
A storm surge warning is in effect from Sunday through Monday, with expected surges of 3-5 feet above ground and up to 6 feet along the coast and Galveston Bay.
Preparation and safety
Yanez advises residents to adjust their plans for tomorrow morning, as conditions will not improve until the afternoon. Continuous updates will be provided as the situation develops.
