A neighborly dispute in east Houston turned violent Friday night when a 73-year-old man shot his 80-year-old neighbor.

According to police, at 8:30 p.m. on the 1500 block of Demaree Ln., an 80-year-old man was rummaging through items under his neighborโ€™s carport, a recurring issue that had previously ended without violence. Hearing the commotion, the 73-year-old neighbor went outside and was confronted by the 80-year-old swinging a cane at him. In response, the 73-year-old shot him with a small pistol.

Both men returned to their homes and called the police. The 80-year-old man is expected to recover.

The 73-year-old is cooperating with authorities, and the case will be referred to the district attorneyโ€™s office to determine if charges will be filed.

โ€œRight now, the 73-year-old is cooperating, being honest about everything that occurred,โ€ HPDโ€™s Lt. Wilkins said. โ€œEverything is being referred to the DAโ€™s office, and theyโ€™re just working through the process to see if they are going to file any charges on anyone right now, so hopefully this wonโ€™t happen again.โ€
