HOUSTON – The 2024 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Jr. Market Steer brought out the big bucks!

This year’s champion, a Simmental raised by Blaize Benson of San Angelo, Texas, sold for $1 million, tying a HLSR record. The donors for the sale were Barbra and Don Jordan, Laura and Steve McNear and Chris and Lisa Cunningham.

Don Jordan set the record Steer bid back in 2022 to celebrate his and the Rodeo’s birthdays. He was happy to be able to match his mark this year.

“This year, I wanted to defend the world record that I have, and my fellow buyers were nice enough to help me make that a reality,” Jordan said.

After hearing the results, Benson expressed his gratitude for such a successful outcome.

“I’m incredibly blessed to be here and am grateful to the man above who put me in this situation,” Benson said.

Blaize and his family have shown at the Rodeo every year since 2017, except for 2020. Chelsie Benson, Blaize’s mother, said this achievement will have a lasting impact on her son.

“He works really hard, and we’ve done this since he was eight. It doesn’t go this way very often; I know this is a core memory that he’ll have forever.”
