1 dead, off-duty officer’s vehicle hit in crash while managing traffic in east Houston

HOUSTON – A driver died after being involved in three-vehicle crash with an off-duty Houston police officer on Friday in east Houston, according to the Houston Police Department.

Officers were called to the scene at East Interstate 610 Highway at Lawndale Street at about 11:34 p.m.

A driver had been going east on 610. They then lost control at a curve and hit the vehicle of an off-duty officer, who had been working a different job and was helping control traffic for a Texas Department of Transportation crew.

The first vehicle then continued north and hit a TxDOT vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle that lost control died at the scene, and the passenger that was inside was taken to the hospital. He is expected to be OK.

The officer was not injured in the crash, and no other injuries were reported.

This incident is under investigation.
