12 units destroyed, firefighter hurt battling apartment fire in west Houston

HOUSTON – A firefighter was taken to the hospital after he was injured while battling a massive apartment fire in west Houston.

The fire broke out at the complex on Westheimer and South Kirkwood Road just before 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The fire reportedly started in an upstairs unit.

When firefighters arrived, they saw flames coming out of the second story and made an offensive attack. Officials initially had trouble with water supply but were able to douse the flames.

Officials from the Houston Fire Department said that 12 units were damaged in the fire however no residents were injured.

The firefighter was taken to a hospital to get checked out but officials did not disclose how the emergency responder was injured.

Investigators are working to determine what started the fire.

The American Red Cross is reportedly helping the families whose units were destroyed.
