Cypress man accused of performing plastic surgery without license hires defense attorney

Alex Padilla, 51, is charged with 3rd degree felony

Alex Padilla performed numerous cosmetic surgical procedures on patients in Houston without a Texas Medical License, an Assistant District Attorney said Friday.

“Well, the evidence from the Houston Police Department investigation shows that he was not assisting, that Mr. Padilla was actually performing the surgeries. We have multiple women who will could testify that that was the case, that it was Mr. Padilla doing the surgery himself. He was the one who was seeing the patients before, during and after,” Sheila Hansel, Harris County Assistant District Attorney, said.

A planned arraignment on Friday did not happen because Alex Padilla, 53, has not yet been indicted by a Harris County Grand Jury.

That activity is not expected to happen until mid-March, Dick DeGuerin, Padilla’s new attorney said Friday.

“He is an M.D. and was a practicing doctor in Venezuela until he and his family left there, partially because of the political situation. And since he’s been in the United States for over 20 years, he has assisted physicians in many capacities. So we’re hopeful that this will be short lived and he’ll get back to doing the assistance to physicians that he’s always done,” DeGuerin said Friday.

Padilla was arrested in an undercover Houston Police Department sting earlier this year.

Padilla remains free after posting a $10,000 bond.
