HOUSTON - A man saved a woman and her granddaughters from a house fire in southeast Houston Friday morning, according to the Houston Fire Department.
Thomas Smith was living with a friend in a home near Dieppe Street and Kassarine Pass when a loud boom from inside the home woke him up around 1: 30 a.m.
Smith said he climbed out of bed and saw smoke as he headed toward the homeowner’s bedroom.
“I jumped out the bed and ran to her room, and something was on top of her — sheetrock and what not,” he said.
Smith freed the woman from the debris and brought her outside.
According to firefighters, he then went back inside the house to save the woman’s 8- and 10-year-old granddaughters who were still asleep.
The residents were safely outside the home when firefighters arrived and no one was hurt, officials said
HFD is investigating the cause of the fire, but said it appears to be electrical in nature and may have started in the laundry room.
KPRC2 learned the woman has owned the house for almost 40 years, and her granddaughters lost almost everything, including clothing, laptops and other items.
