Bart Whitaker's father: I forgive him

HOUSTON – The father of Bart Whitaker, a Sugar Land man who is on death row for arranging the murders of his family members so he could collect a million dollar inheritance, spoke out about his son in a new interview on NBC's "Megyn Kelly Today."

Kelly Tuesday morning spoke with Kent Whitaker, who said he forgave his son for the crime.

It's a case KPRC2 first brought you nearly 15 years ago.

In December 2003, investigators said Bart Whitaker arranged to make the shooting look like he and his family members interrupted a burglary as they returned home from dinner.

A masked gunman inside the home shot and killed Bart Whitaker's 19-year-old brother, Kevin, and his mother, Tricia.

The shooter wounded Whitaker and his father.

"What happened to me was unusual and I can't really explain it very well. But I think God met me that night in the hospital and helped me come to a complete forgiveness -- even though I didn't have any idea who it was to -- and it was certainly before I found out Bart might be involved," Kent Whitaker said.

Kent Whitaker has traveled the country speaking about forgiveness. He wrote a best-selling book about it and visits Bart in prison.

Bart Whitaker is set to be executed on Feb. 22.

In 2012, KPRC2 interviewed Bart Whitaker. You can watch that interview here. And read more about our reporting here.
