LA MARQUE, Texas – A 15-year-old boy was taken into custody Monday in connection with Sunday's deadly shooting at a La Marque fast-food restaurant.
The shooting was reported at 2:12 p.m. at the Sonic restaurant on FM Road 1764 near Interstate 45.
La Marque police said 18-year-old Miles Mitchell and his brother, Marcell Mitchell, drove themselves to an urgent care clinic in Texas City, where Miles Mitchell was pronounced dead.
Marcell Mitchell was said to be recovering from his injuries.
"I was across the street and I heard three shots," said a man who wanted to conceal his identity. "I saw a small SUV with two white males in it and the driver had blood on his neck, and the passenger was looking at the driver as they ran a red light and went that way."
Lt. Chad Waggoner, of the La Marque Police Department, said it appears the shooting stemmed from a marijuana deal.
"The transaction turned sour and a gun was pulled and shots were fired," La Marque Police Chief Kirk Jackson said.
Waggoner said the suspect's identity will not be released because he is a minor, but he said that La Marque police worked closely with Friendswood police to facilitate the boy's surrender.
"Ultimately, the family members cooperated and brought the individual to us and he was charged with murder," Jackson said.
The boy is being held at the Galveston County Juvenile Justice Center, Wagoner said.
"(The family is) hurting. It’s a horrible situation. I cannot imagine what his family’s going through right now," Jackson said.
Dickinson Independent School District officials said Miles Mitchell withdrew from Dickinson High School in September 2018.
"Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time," Dickinson ISD said in a statement.
