A sister's loss: Woman opens up about sister being killed in murder-suicide

HOUSTON – Bryanna Lapsley says she watched a gut-wrenching video moments before her sister Brittney Smith was shot to death by her controlling ex-boyfriend.

Lapsley said the man in the video is Smith's ex-boyfriend, 29-year-old Massamba Diatta.

She said Diatta was a Marine who drove from California to Houston last Tuesday. Lapsley’s said her sister dated Diatta for three years and that he was physically abusive to Smith.

“He used to give her (Smith) a black eye,” Lapsley said.

Last month, Lapsley said Smith decided to move to Houston for a fresh start and to leave her relationship behind. Lapsley said on Tuesday, Diatta came to Houston asking for Smith to come see him at the Red Roof Inn. Lapsley said her sister agreed to meet him and brought her 4-year-old son with her.

Hours later, Lapsley said Smith was fatally shot and then Diatta turned the gun on himself while her son was watching.

“I said what was mommy doing when this happened? He was like, 'They were arguing' and I said 'Where was mommy sitting?' He said she was sitting on the bed and he (Diatta) was next to her. I said 'Where did he shoot her?' He pointed to me right here in the chest,” Lapsley said.

A Gofund Me Page account has been set up to help pay for the funeral expenses.
