Standoff involving 5-year-old ends with man in custody in Atascocita neighborhood


ATASCOCITA, Texas – A standoff ended Wednesday with a 20-year-old man in custody after deputies surrounded his mother's northeast Harris County home.

A SWAT team and hostage negotiators were called around 2:30 a.m. to a home in the 19200 block of Kacey Lane in Atascocita after the man, who was in town from Detroit visiting his mother, refused to come out of the house.

"A 20-year-old male who was behaving erratically, threatening suicide by cop," said Marcus Kinnard-Bing, with the Homeland Security Bureau Commander for the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "When they showed up the suspect had been cutting his wrists and he fled the scene."

Investigators said the man, identified as Montez Lee, returned to the home, kicked in the front door and barricaded himself inside with his 5-year-old sister.

Deputies said they do not believe the girl was in danger or being injured.

Around 5 a.m., as negotiators tried ot coax the man out of the home, the child ran out safely.

It is unclear what triggered the situation.
