Deputies, troopers fire shots at suspect who rammed patrol vehicle at end of chase

HOUSTON – Harris County deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety state troopers fired shots at a vehicle they were chasing Thursday in west Houston, according to authorities.

The chase started in northeast Harris County around 7 p.m. at U.S. 59 and Will Clayton Parkway when deputies initiated a traffic stop on a truck being driven erratically by 46-year-old William Bernard Landers, authorities said. Landers pulled his truck over and spoke with a deputy, but when the deputy found out Landers had warrants out for his arrest, the suspect fled in his truck.

The chase ended about 50 minutes later.

Authorities said Landers rammed his vehicle into multiple patrol vehicles and a civilian vehicle before crashing into a tree at the end of the chase in the 1600 block of Brittmore Road.

Two Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies and five DPS troopers fired shots. Authorities said most of the shots hit Landers' vehicle.

Authorities said Landers yelled at officers to shoot him. Instead, authorities said they subdued him with a Taser.

No injuries were reported.

Landers was arrested and charged with felony evading in a motor vehicle and three counts of aggravated assault on a public servant.
