A raccoon invasion leaves a Houston mother in need of help

The single mother feared she had a sewage leak, it was much worse.

HOUSTON – Sometimes a problem hiding above your head can be much worse than you ever imagined.

That’s what Annie discovered at her home off Deeds Road in west Houston.

Annie reached out to 2 Helps You after dealing with an unwanted group of visitors in her attic: a raccoon and her babies.

We initially arrived at her residence to solve the raccoon problem she reached out to our Help Desk about. Bee’n Green and it’s owner Travis Feiner attempted to trap the animals but momma and her babies decided to move out on their own.

The raccoons may have been gone, but they left behind another major problem.

Annie’s attic had been devastated.

“It was so bad we called the fire department because I thought we had a sewage leak,” Annie said.

That’s when another helping hand entered the story.

His name is Mark Rodriguez, owner of MJ Insulation.

On Friday morning, with Texas summer heat temperatures on the rise, MJ Insulation arrived with an army of workers and began removing the old insulation.

The cleanup took several hours.

Workers also sealed openings they found inside the attic, treated the space with a disinfectant solution and then installed new insulation.

By the time they were finished, the attic had been transformed.

Rodriguez says jobs like these are common in the Houston area, “It’s a big issue in Houston, rats get in the attic, raccoons like what she had and then they leave all their mess around and what people don’t understand is that can affect the health of the homeowner.”

For homeowners dealing with wildlife getting into their attics, the problem can quickly become more than a nuisance. For renters, Texas law does provide protections when the conditions impact a tenant’s physical health or safety with that responsibility falling on the landlord.

In Annie’s case, she wasn’t looking for a handout.

The single mother needed a solution.

What happened next was something she never expected. Two complete strangers along with 2 Helps You stepped up to help, “It’s amazing. I was not expecting this to be honest. I’m very overwhelmed, grateful and this is just perfect, it’s perfect.”

The work was especially meaningful considering both companies came out to help as the temperatures in the are were pushing close to 100 degrees.
