Overturned 18-wheeler leaves bales of cotton, closes lanes on Southwest Freeway

HOUSTON – A crash involving an 18-wheeler carrying cotton balls closed the southbound interchange at the West Loop and Highway 59 Thursday into Friday.

Investigators said the 18-wheeler was traveling inbound on the Southwest Freeway around 11p.m. when the driver took the exit ramp to go to West Loop southbound too fast. The load shifted and caused the trailer and rig to crash onto its side, investigators said.

The driver was not hurt.

Dozens of bales of cotton were thrown from the busted up trailer and some of the bales fell to road below the ramp.

Debris blocked the on ramps from 59 to go to the southbound lanes of West Loop for more than five hours as crews worked to clean up the mess.
