Big moment for Katy ISD's new $70 million stadium

Dedication ceremony for Legacy Stadium

KATY – Thursday was a big day for Katy Independent School District and the entire Katy community, as the new mega-stadium was unveiled.

The stadium made headlines over the past few years for its large price tag.

When voters approved the new stadium construction in 2014, the estimated cost was $58 million. But in 2016 we learned the price tag grew to $70 million.

At $70 million, Katy's Legacy Stadium is the most expensive stadium in the country.

There are a few more stadiums in Texas that have some high price tags.

One in McKinney cost $63 million to build, and one in Allen was $60 million.

The stadium's capacity is around 12,000.

The school district said the stadium will serve more than 77,000 students and community members across the district.

"We're past the wow factor, we're just excited and looking forward to getting that first game in here," Katy ISD Superintendent Lance Hindt said.

Athletic and fine arts teams from eight high schools are among those who will benefit.

The facility's name is Legacy Stadium, while the field itself was named for Mike Johnston, who led the Katy Tigers to three state football titles in seven years.

An official dedication ceremony was held Thursday. The event included special performances by all high school bands and choir directors.
