Houston Zoo's newest addition trains like an Olympian

Zoo's new resident is Komodo dragon

HOUSTON – The Houston Zoo's newest resident is a Komodo dragon named Phoenix.

The Komodo dragon is the world's largest lizard, but this particular dragon currently weighs only 5 pounds. That will change as Phoenix gets older and bigger. The zoo says he could one day weigh up to 170 pounds.

Phoenix spends time training and loves to eat protein.

His main trainer said his favorite foods are rodents, quail, chicken, rabbit, and eggs.

The zoo said Phoenix currently spends a few minutes each week in training sessions, which includes his trainer asking him to touch a ball with his snout and giving him a reward in return.

Phoenix is the zoo's second Komodo dragon. The other dragon is his cousin, Boga. Both live in the zoo’s Reptile and Amphibian House.
