HOUSTON – A Houston crossing guard celebrated her 40th anniversary with Houston ISD Monday.
Joy Wilson, 83, has worked at Helms Elementary School on West 21st Street and Nicholas Street in the Heights all 40 years.
When Wilson was asked what made her do the job for four decades, Wilson responded, "I love little kids."
Wilson said she has always wanted to protect as many children as possible.
HISD plans on having an event to honor Wilson when she turns 84 on September 8.
Wilson said times have changed since she started as a crossing guard in 1974.
When she began her career, most parents did not walk their children to school.
According to Wilson, most students are accompanied to school now.
Wilson also worked for the Boy Scouts of America but retired last year.
