Deputies shoot man who held SWAT team at bay

LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas – A SWAT standoff at a Liberty County home ended with gunfire Friday afternoon.

Liberty County said William Wingfield, 47, barricaded himself inside a house on F.M. 1011 near Highway 6 between Hardin and Liberty.

Investigators said they received a call about a suicide in progress about 10 a.m. Police said Wingfield, a concrete contractor, was upset over a break-up with his girlfriend.

Detectives said that when deputies arrived at the home, Wingfield started firing at deputies.

The deputies took cover in a drainage ditch and called for help. They stayed in the ditch until an armored car arrived from Baytown. That car gave them the cover they needed to get out while Wingfield kept shooting, investigators said.

Deputies and Wingfield then exchanged gunfire, officials said.

Wingfield was wounded by deputies, but even after that, he refused to surrender, investigators said.

"We talked extensively about trying to get him to let us come in and get him out of the house," Capt. Rex Evans said. "Those negotiations were very tense."

Wingfield was taken by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in serious condition.
