Pet store owner accused of breaking ‘puppy mill’ ordinance faces arrest after skipping trial

(KPRC)

A Houston pet store owner is accused of breaking the City’s “humane pet store” ordinance which bans stores from selling animals from puppy mills, instead requiring sales of puppies from places like animal shelters or private rescues.

Petland owner Luis Marquez was scheduled to appear in a City of Houston Municipal Court on Thursday afternoon. He was not there and after waiting 15 minutes, the judge issued a warrant for his arrest.

Marquez was due in court regarding at least seven citations he has received for allegedly selling pets from puppy mills, in violation of the City’s ordinance.

Lizzo responds to lawsuit, calling allegations ‘false,’ stories ‘sensationalized’

Houston singer Lizzo responded to a lawsuit filed earlier this week with a statement on Instagram.

“The last few days have been gut-wrenchingly difficult and overwhelmingly disappointing. My work ethic, morals and respectfulness have been questioned. My character has been criticized. Usually I choose not to respond to false allegations but these are as unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous to not be addressed.

Teacher burnout?

Over 300,000 public school teachers and staff quit their job between Feb 2020 and May 2022. In a June 2022 poll, more than 40% of K-12 teachers felt burned out “always” or “very often” at work.

The most common challenges teachers report facing include safety concerns, low salaries, reduced funding, and mental health. Join us for KPRC 2+ at 7 to learn how to identify if your stress levels are normal, and coping tips if you’re experiencing burnout.

“Blue eyes, red shirt, brown shoes!!”

Just as you read the headline, mothers across the country yell about their kids’ descriptions when they get lost in a public place. It’s called “Loud Looking.”

It works like an immediate Amber Alert system: everyone within the store starts repeating the description to find the child sooner.

However, there is one major piece of information you should never yell out. Tune in to KPRC 2+ Now at 8 a.m. to learn more.

Women and Alcohol

Men are nearly three times more likely than women to die from alcohol use in the United States, but a new report shows that gap has narrowed as the risk for women has grown, especially in recent years.

From 2018 to 2020, the alcohol-related death rate among men increased by an average of 12.5% each year. But for women, rates surged by an average of nearly 15% each year in that same time period.

Could you pass a civics quiz?

For roughly 8 out of 10 students in the 8th grade, the answer to that question is no - according to data recently released by the U.S. Department of Education.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation is working to change that through the National Civics Bee. Middle schoolers from across the Houston area will compete in the Texas State Finals this weekend.

But first, they’re stopping by KPRC 2+ Now at 8. to talk about why learning about civics is important to them – and to give our KPRC 2 anchors a little civics pop quiz. Watch to see if you can beat them!
