Houston – A mountain climb becomes a much bigger journey in “Uhuru,” a new dramedy at Houston’s Alley Theatre.
Written by Gloria Majule and directed by Shariffa Ali, the production follows an unlikely group attempting a “Tanzanian-only” climb up Mount Kilimanjaro. Along the way, the characters confront questions of identity, culture, access and belonging, with humor and satire bringing these timely themes to life.
Actors David Gow and Michael Oloyede joined Houston Life to discuss the production and the story’s deeper message. They also shared how the show’s lighting, sound and projections help immerse audiences in the mountain-climbing experience.
“Uhuru” runs through Nov. 8 at the Alley Theatre. Tickets and showtimes are available at alleytheatre.org/Uhuru.
