Houston – Mahjong has deep roots in Chinese culture, dating back centuries as a game built on strategy, connection and tradition. Now, it is experiencing a major resurgence across the United States, popping up everywhere from social groups to community spaces.
For one local woman, that renewed interest became something much more personal.
Robin Hall, founder of Mahjong for a Cause, said what started as a simple lesson quickly turned into a growing passion shared among friends.
About a year after attending a Friendswood Education Foundation gala, Hall purchased a mahjong lesson package. She invited friends to join her, and what followed was immediate interest and excitement.
Weekly game nights quickly grew into something larger, with friends gathering regularly and even taking the game on trips and cruises. Eventually, Hall realized the hobby had potential far beyond her own circle.
As interest grew, she combined her love for teaching with her desire to stay active in the community.
That led to the creation of Mahjong for a Cause, a space dedicated to playing, learning, and giving back. The group started with pop-up events and quickly expanded, hosting large gatherings that brought in more than 100 people at launch. Today, they operate from a permanent space with multiple tables and a growing membership.
At the heart of the mission is what Hall calls “play, connect and give back.”
Each event charges a modest entry fee, with 100% of proceeds going directly to charity. In recent months, the group has donated thousands of dollars to local organizations, including first responders and other community nonprofits.
Hall said the response has been overwhelming, with players ranging from retirees to working professionals, men and women, and beginners learning alongside experienced players.
The game itself is built on strategy and pattern recognition, but Hall said its real value lies in its social connection.
Hall and her team now hope to expand their impact even further, with a goal of donating $100,000 to local nonprofits this year while continuing to grow their community of players.
